What's the best way of telling someone you have an ostomy?

Hi there, I need some advice please...I've been going to my local nightclub for 5 years, I guy who's also gone there all that time (and longer apparently) is suddenly showing an interest in me. He's very shy, quiet and hardly talks to anyone but his close mate, they're both bachelors, it was my new 'hairdo' (my wig since hair loss due to low dose chemo for my crohn's) that did it, they were lightheartedly arguing whether it was me or not! I started chatting to the quiet guy, I've only ever said ...

Ostomy diet

Is there such a thing as an ostomy diet? I am barely getting any output from my colostomy in at least a month, and I have absolutely no appetite. Last year I was in hospital with what they thought was a partial small bowel obstruction. My "diet" has been small amount of baby oatmeal and some coffee at breakfast: maybe cup of soup for lunch. Small amount of yogurt, jars of baby fruit. I tried to eat small amounts of well-cooked green beans with the carrots today. I've tried to dri...

Recycling ostomy bags???

Has anyone ever heard of cleaning ostomy bags after use? I am all for recycling, but I am also concerned about the health risks.

Disposing of an ostomy bag at a friend's house

I have an ileostomy and i like to use closed end pouches and change them twice a day. I can carry an Ostaway Bag (black, thick, zip-lock) with me and keep a fresh closed end ostomy bag with me in my pocket. Often when I am at someone's house i need to dispose of one bag and put on a fresh one. I really prefer using the closed-ended pouches and i know there isn't any smell if they are put inside the black, thick, Ostaway Zip-Lock Bag. My question is; do you think it is o.k. to throw this in s...

Naming my ostomy

I never thought of naming my stoma. I guess by now I would have to call it "old timer" as I have had it for 40 years now.....

Avoiding Diaper Rash
Here are a few good tips to help keep your baby's bottom rash-free:

The best defense against diaper rash is a dry bottom, so change your baby's diaper as soon as possible after it becomes wet or soiled. Clean your baby's genital area thoroughly with each diaper change. Pat his or her skin dry - never rub it.

If your baby seems prone to diaper rash, coat his or her bottom with a thin layer of protective ointment or diaper cream with zinc oxide after each diaper change. Skip the talcum powder, as the dust is harmful to your baby's lungs if he or she breathes it in. If you want to use powder, choose the safer cornstarch-based type.
*Clinically Proven: In a consumer study it was shown that:

  • 88% of moms agreed that it soothed red, irritated skin
  • 81% of moms agreed that it reduced severity on first application
  • 78% of moms saw visible improvement by the next diaper change
  • Over 80% of subjects showed a reduction in visible redness at 24 hours
  • 9 out of 10 moms saw a reduction in severity and 8 out of 10 in duration of diaper rash
When your baby starts eating solid foods, introduce one new item at a time. Waiting a few days between each introduction will make it easier to determine whether sensitivity to the food causes a diaper rash. If it does, you can eliminate that food for the time being. Don't secure the diaper too tightly so there is room for air to circulate. Loose clothing will let your baby's bottom breathe. Avoid plastic pants and other airtight fabrics.

Don't wash cloth diapers with detergents that contain fragrances, and skip the fabric softener - both can irritate your baby's skin. Use hot water and double rinse your baby's diapers. You might also add half a cup of vinegar to the first rinse water to eliminate alkaline irritants.

Breastfeed your baby for as long as you can. Breastfeeding boosts your baby's resistance to infections in general and makes him less likely to need antibiotics, which can contribute to diaper rash. If your baby goes to daycare, make sure that his or her caregivers understand the importance of taking these measures to prevent diaper rash.

Tip: To further help the healing process from diaper rash, put your baby's diaper on loosely or use a diaper that's a little big to allow for better air circulation. If your baby wears cloth diapers, don't use plastic pants. If you buy disposables, try a different brand to see if that helps.
